Job Title:  Medical Officer (Medical Oncology)

Location:

Job Summary

  • Provide medical care to oncology patients, including routine examinations, performing diagnostic investigations, and providing follow-up care, ensuring patient-centered care under supervision.
  • Assist in the diagnosis treatment, and management of oncology patients, working closely with senior medical staff and specialists to ensure effective care.
  • Support clinical evaluations of oncology patients, assisting in the formulation of treament plans, under the guidance of senior medical staff.
  • Participate in departmental activities, including clinical governance, service development, and support the teaching and training of junior medical staff and students.
  • Assist in the review of departmental policies, contributing to operational efficiency and continious improvement within the oncology department.

Principles Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage Acute and Elective Caseloads
    • Support multidisciplineary teams in deliveing patient care, working under the supervision of senior medical staff.
    • Assist in evaluating patient conditions and treatment progress, ensuring prompt reporing to senior staff for adjustments.
    • Provide basic education to patients and families on treament plans and expected outcomes, as directed by senior colleagues.
    • Assist with the implementation of treatment plans under the guidance of more senior staff, with a focus on non-surgical options.
    • Monitor patient's progress and inform senior staff about any significant changes in their condition or response to treatment.

 

  • Patient Referrals and Ward Management
    • Assist in the coordination of care transitions ensuring that patients are referred to the appropriate specialists or services.
    • Monitor patients' condistion regularly, ensuring that any changes are promptly documented and communicated to the senior medical team.
    • Collaborate with nursing team to ensure prescribed treatments are properly carried out, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
    • Participate in routine patient assessments in both inpatient and outpatient settings, assisting with care planning and treatment follow-up.

 

  • Oncology Patient Assessment
    • Conduct initial patient consultations under the supervision of senior staff, ensuring thorough history-taking and basic assessment.
    • Collaborate with senior medicla staff to formulate treatment plans, primarily focusing on non-invasive and non-surgical approaches.
    • Ensure accurate documentation of patient assessments, diagnostic results, and treatment plans.
    • Coordinate diagnostic tests as needed, ensuring timely access to the necessary imaging or laboratory work for diagnosis.

 

  • Procedural Support and Specialists Collaboration
    • Assist in procedures like biopsies or other diagnostic interventions, under supervision and with the necessary support from consultants or specialists.
    • Ensure patient comfort and safety during and after procedures, following hospital protocols and guidelines. 
    • Document procedural outcomes and inform the senior team about the results, ensuring follow-up actions are taken.
    • Participate in team meetings, providing updates on patient care and contributing to the discussion when appropriate.
    • Coordinate referrals to specialists as needed and follow-up on patient progress to ensure continuity of care.

Professional Requirements

  • A minimum of five (5) years of full-time clincal working experience post registration in a government or private health facilities is required.
  • Experience in Primary Healthcare is highly advantageous.

Educational Requirements

  • Possess a Primary Medical Degree, MBBS, or equivalent from an institute recognized by the Brunei Medical Board (BMB) of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
  • Postgraduate of Vocational training in Medicine, Primary Health Care, or other relevent specialty from an institute recognized by the Brunei Medical Board is an added advantage.
  • Exit qualification of Part 1 and Part 2 Membership of the Royal Colleges of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, Masters in Medicine and work/training experience in other relevent field is desirable.
  • Professional Membership or Fellowship such as Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), or equivalent with work/training experience in the field Medical Oncology and/or other relevent field is an added advantage.

Specialised Skills/Knowledge/Attribute Requirement

  • In-depth knowledge of Oncology care and treatment protocols, including current clinical guidelines, evidence-based practices and emerging trends in oncology research.
  • Comprehesive understanding of healthcare regulations and standards, and adherence to clinical safety protocols.
  • Strong analytical skilss to assess complex oncology cases, interpret diagnostic results, and make data-driven decision in patient care and treament planning.
