Job Title:  Radiation Therapist

Job Summary

  • Administer radiation treatments to patients as prescribed by physicians, ensuring accurate delivery of the prescribed radiation dose.
  • Properly position patients using appropriate immobilization devices and markers to ensure precise treatment.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment (Truebeam, Edge, CT Scan, and Bravos Brachytherapy) and prepare and maintain patient records and reports.
  • Schedule simulation and treatment appointments, manage patient charges with proper billing, and monitor equipment performance, reporting any issues to the appropriate supervisor.

Principles Duties and Responsibilities

Administer Radiation Treatments:
•    Deliver a planned course of basic and routine radiation therapy, including 4-field pelvis, anterior and posterior lung, whole brain, 3-field head and neck, breast tangents, and external electron beam.
•    Acquire competency in multiple specialized treatment modalities and methods, including IMRT, IGRT, SRS/SRT, DEBH, DIBH, and SBRT.
•    Assist Radiation Oncologist in tumor localization and simulation procedures using CT simulators, computers, and other equipment.
•    Acquire CT images as required for planning of radiation therapy.
•    Operate linear accelerators (Truebeam and Edge) using the current operating system and record and verify function.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
•    Prepare equipment to ensure it is operational, safe, and functioning according to diagnostic standards.
•    Perform machine QA, complete all quality checks, and ensure necessary documentation and equipment logs are maintained.
•    Report equipment problems to the Team Lead and ensure daily equipment and room maintenance are performed before, during, and after each procedure.
•    Ensure infection control standards are met through proper equipment cleaning and sterilization methods.

Patient Scheduling and Billing:
•    Schedule simulation and treatment appointments, ensuring efficient use of resources and patient convenience.
•    Manage patient charges with proper billing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with hospital policies.
•    Assist with patient scheduling with other departments when needed.

Patient Care and Support:
•    Observe patient conditions, recognize the need for emotional and psychological support, and refer patients to departmental staff as necessary.
•    Explain the radiation therapy process to patients and reassure them throughout their treatment.
•    Monitor patients during treatment and take corrective actions if necessary.
•    Obtain necessary written consent and understanding for any specific procedures.
•    Maintain detailed and accurate daily records of treatment, checking patient prescriptions and treatment records for errors.

Professional Requirements

•    Minimum of one (1) year Clinical Training and other relevant experience as a Radiation Therapist is essential.

Educational Requirements

  • A diploma or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Radiation Therapy is required.
  • An Undergraduate degree in Radiation Therapy is desirable.

Specialised Skills/Knowledge/Attribute Requirement

  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of radiation therapy techniques and protocols, including VMAT, IMRT and IGRT
  • Additional expertise in SRS/SRT, DIBH/EEBH, and SBRT is considered an advantage.
  • Proficient in operating and maintaining Linear accelerators (Linacs). CT Scanners, and Brachytherapy systems.
  • Experience with Bravo System, Varian TrueBeam, and Edge, as well as familiarity with ARIA, will be an advantage.
  • Familiarity with current radiation safety standards and infection control methods.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and clinical team members.
  • Ability to monitor patient conditions, provide emotional and psychological support, and refer patients to departmental staff as necessary.
  • Competency in patient positioning and use of immobilization devices, head masks, and bolus.
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality and privacy principles.
