Job Title:  Operation Theatre Assistant

Job Summary

To provide essential technical and clinical support in the operating theatre, ensuring a safe, sterile, and efficient environment during surgical and anesthesia related procedures. The Operating Theatre Technician assists the surgical, anesthesia, and nursing teams by preparing, operating, and maintaining instruments, equipment, and supplies before, during, and after surgery

Principles Duties and Responsibilities

  • Pre-Operative Duties
    • Inspect and ensure the functionality of surgical equipments like Operating microscope, Neuro drills, Cautery machines and other Neuro related equipment.
    • Inspect and ensure the functionality of anesthesia machines and suction devices.
    • Inspect and ensure the functionality of Zeego (Digital angiography machine), C-Arm machines.
    • Ensure Radiation safety measures are in place (Lead Aprons, Shields and Dosimeters)
    • The overall maintenance of the OT (Temperature and Humidity settings).
    • Prepare the operating theatre with instruments and sterile supplies according to the surgical schedule.
    • Assist with patient positioning and draping in collaboration with the surgical and anesthesia teams.

 

  • Intra-Operative Duties
    • Operate and monitor theatre equipment (e.g., diathermy, suction, microscopes, laparoscopic towers).
    • Assist surgeons and nurses by providing instruments, sutures, and consumables during procedures.
    • Anticipate the surgical team’s needs to ensure smooth workflow and efficiency.
    • Adhere strictly to infection control, sterilization, and safety protocols.

 

  • Post-Operative Duties
    • Decontaminate and correctly store instruments and equipment.
    • Clear and reset the operating theatre for subsequent procedures.
    • Assist in the safe transfer of patients to the recovery area.
    • Safe disposal of Biomedical and Radiological waste
    • Maintain accurate records of instrument usage, equipment checks, and theatre logs.

Educational Requirements

Minimum of Diploma in any Science subject or other related field.

Specialised Skills/Knowledge/Attribute Requirement

  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical instruments, medical equipment, and sterile techniques.
  • Ability to remain calm, precise, and focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong understanding of infection control practices and patient safety standards.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Basic troubleshooting and maintenance skills for medical equipment.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
