Job Title:  Fertility counselor

Job Summary

The Fertility Counselor provides emotional, psychological, and therapeutic support to individuals and couples undergoing fertility assessments and treatments. The role involves guiding patients through complex emotional experiences related to infertility, reproductive options, treatment outcomes, and decision-making. The counselor collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic and patient-centered fertility care.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and couples counseling to patients experiencing fertility-related emotional and psychological stress.
  • Support patients through treatment phases such as IVF, fertility preservation.
  • Facilitate group sessions or educational workshops when required.
  • Conduct psychosocial assessments and develop tailored support plans.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and embryologists to ensure integrated patient care.
  • Maintain detailed and confidential patient records and documentation.
  • Participate in the development of patient education materials and programs.
  • Uphold ethical and professional standards in counseling practices.
  • Provide crisis support when needed, especially in cases of treatment failure or pregnancy loss.

Educational Requirement

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counselling with Special Interest in Reproductive Medicine (or equivalent) are required from a recognized institution.

Professional Requirement

  • Minimum of three (3) years of working experience in the same or related field, preferably within a healthcare or reproductive medicine setting.
  • Licensed Psychologist or Licensed Counsellor is an added advantage.

Specialized Skills/Knowledge/Attributes Requirements

  • Ability to speak English is required; proficiency in Malay is an advantage.
  • In-depth understanding of fertility issues, reproductive health, and the emotional impacts of infertility.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, empathy, and discretion.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Experience in trauma-informed counseling approaches is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations in fertility counseling.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary clinical environment.
