Job Title:  CSSD Technician

Job Summary

CSSD Technician is responsible for providing safe and functional instruments to users' departments within Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC), and Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre (GJPMC) in a timely manner. 

Education Requirements

  • Minimum of Diploma in Science with credit in English subject
  • Has completed certificate program such as CSSD Basic Course, or equivalent
  • Holds a valid certification such as Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician, or equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years’ Work Experience (preferable), or
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience working in the sterile processing field.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Full compliance with area specific safety standards
  • Full compliance with hand hygiene and dress code including PPE.
  • Monitoring environmental conditions of all reprocessing areas.
  • Preparation of work area for decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization and storage.
  • Testing and operating all cleaning or sterilization equipment such as ultrasonic tub, washer-disinfector, drying cabinet, pack sealer, plasma sterilizer, steam sterilizer, and biological indicator incubator as per manufacturers' IFU.
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of all equipment.
  • Performing quality assurance tests of all chemicals, equipment and disinfection sterilization processes as per departmental SOP.
  • Receiving and checking contaminated instruments or medical devices for decontamination.
  • Identification and separation of reusable and disposable items.
  • Preparation of items for decontamination.
  • Evaluating the degree of disinfection required based on the Spaulding Classification System.
  • Selection and use of appropriate disinfectants.
  • Performing high-level disinfection.
  • Preform cleaning, disinfection and sterilization according to the instrument or medical device manufacturer's IFU.
  • Inspection of items for cleanliness and functionality.
  • Identifying correct contents for assemble as per standardized count sheet.
  • Assembling contents for packaging.
  • Selecting appropriate packaging method for the intended sterilization cycle.
  • Labeling packages.
  • Documenting, monitoring, record keeping and tracking of flow of instruments.
  • Checking of sterilization package integrity.
  • Verification of cycle parameters.
  • Receiving, inspecting, stocking and rotating inventory.
  • Distributing sterile and non-sterile items.
  • Keeping technical skills up to date and applying new knowledge to job functions.
  • Supervising the CSSD Assistant.

Specialised Skills/Knowledge/Attribute Requirement

  • Physical Fitness - must be fit with good trunk strength to support part of one's body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing.
  • Critical Thinking - able to determine prioritization strategies for instrumentation turnaround.
  • Arm-hand steadiness - able to keep one's hand and arm steady while moving their arm or while holding their arm and hand on one position
  • Finger dexterity - able to precisely coordinate movements of the fingers of one or both hand to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects.
  • Manual dexterity - able to quickly move one's hand, hand together with their arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects.
  • Troubleshooting - determining the causes of operating errors and deciding how to correct them e.g. Troubleshooting quality errors, wet packs etc.
  • Analytical thinking - technicians are responsible for reporting all mechanical defects as well as assembling and disassembling equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills - sterilization technicians must update documentation and write legible reports
  • Writing skills - sterilization technicians must update documentation and write legible reports
  • Quality control analysis - able to perform sterilization quality assurance procedures and determining results.
  • Active listening - able to pay full attention when receiving requests from end user departments and other work areas. As well as receiving education and information about products and processes.
  • Reading comprehension - able to follow policies, procedures and device (IFU)
  • Active learning - able to pau full attention in receiving education and information about changes in products, processes, standards and regulations and applying it to job tasks.
  • Time management - able to prioritize tasks and process steps to meet instruments
  • Judgement and decision making - able to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one e.g. initiating a sterilization recall when a sterilizer printout is questionable or removing a package from the system, that maybe contaminated.
