Job Title:  Medical Officer (Neuro ICU)

Job Summary

The Medical Officer (Neurocritical Care) is a key member of the Neurocritical Care team, responsible for delivering comprehensive critical care to patients with a wide spectrum of neurological disorders with acute medical conditions in the Neuro ICU. 
While stroke care remains a core component, the role encompasses acute neurology and neurosurgical conditions, neuroinflammatory conditions, and status epilepsy. The postholder will participate in on-call duties, including stroke thrombolysis, code blue emergencies and provide acute medical care across the SMS building (PJSC building). 

Principles Duties and Responsibilities

• Clinical Care
  • Conduct detailed assessments for all patients referred to Neurocritical Care and formulate appropriate differential diagnoses.  
  • Manage acute neurology/neurosurgery cases including stroke, seizures, encephalitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other emergencies as appropriate.
  • Provide hyperacute stroke care including thrombolysis and thrombectomy coordination.
  • Participate in on-call roster, covering neurocritical care and acute medical care in other areas of SMS building (PJSC Building).
  • Interpret and integrate findings from clinical evaluation, laboratory and radiology findings, other invasive /non-invasive cardiorespiratory monitoring for planning Neuro ICU admission and care. 
  • Communicate with the on-call teams – ICU, Neurology, Neurosurgery and other referral hospitals as deemed necessary for coordinating and organization of treatment plans. 

• Patient Education and Support
  • Counsel patients and families on neurological conditions, treatment plans, and prognosis.
  • Promote awareness of neurological health, stroke prevention, and lifestyle modification.

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration
  • Engage in multidisciplinary rounds, case conferences, and rehabilitation planning.
  • Collaborate with allied health professionals, rehabilitation teams, and other specialties.

• Clinical Governance, Teaching, and Research
  • Contribute to audits, protocol development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental teaching, CME activities, and clinical research.

Professional Requirements

• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in hospital-based medicine.
• Prior exposure to Critical care, Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, preferred.
• Fluency in performing ICU bedside procedures – CVC Insertion, Arterial line insertion, vascular access, Airway management skills preferred. 

Educational Requirements

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by the Brunei Medical Board.
• MRCP Part 1 or Part 2 or recognised qualifications in Critical Care from appropriate boards/ professional societies will be desirable but not mandatory
