Job Title:  Senior Medical Officer

Job Summary

  • Provide medical care to oncology patients, including routine examinations, diagnostic investigations, and follow-up care, under the guidance of senior specialists.
  • Assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of oncology patients, collaborating with senior medical staff and specialists to ensure effective patient care.
  • Contribute to clinical evaluations and assist in formulating treatment plans for oncology patients, with some level of independent decision-making and supervision from senior staff.
  • Participate in departmental activities, such as clinical governance, service development, and provide mentorship and guidance to junior medical officers.
  • Assist in the review and development of departmental policies, supporting continuous improvement and contributing to the overall operational efficiency of the oncology department.

Principles Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage Acute and Elective Caseloads
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (oncologists, nurses, radiologists) to ensure comprehensive patient care for oncology cases.
    • Assist in evaluating and adjusting treatment plans in response to changes in patient condition, working under the guidance of consultants.
    • Educate patients and their families thoroughly on disease progression, treatment options, potential side effects, and management strategies.
    • Assist in developing and implementing treatment plans, focusing mainly on non-surgical interventions, with guidance from senior colleagues.
    • Monitor patients' progress, adjust treatment plans accordingly, and report any significant changes to the consultant.

 

  • Patient Referrals and Ward Management
    • Coordinate patient care transitions between different specialists, departments, and support services, ensuring a smooth continuity of care.
    • Assess patients regularly in both inpatient and outpatient settings, documenting any changes in clinical conditions to inform ongoing treatment plans.
    • Collaborate with the nursing team to ensure that prescribed treatments and care plans are followed correctly, ensuring high-quality patient care at all times.
    • Assist in managing patient care in ward settings, ensuring timely follow-ups and addressing any concerns or changes in a patient's condition.

 

  • Oncology Patient Assessment
    • Conduct thorough consultations for new oncology patients, gathering comprehensive patient histories and ordering appropriate diagnostic tests (e.g., CT, MRI, biopsies).
    • Collaborate with consultants in formulating treatment plans based on assessment findings, with a focus on non-surgical treatment options (e.g., chemotherapy, radiotherapy).
    • Ensure that accurate and up-to-date records of clinical findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, and patient progress are maintained at all times.
    • Coordinate timely access to diagnostic tests, working with imaging and laboratory teams to ensure rapid initiation of treatment plans after diagnosis.

 

  • Procedural Support and Specialists Collaboration
    • Assist consultants and specialists during diagnostic or therapeutic procedures (e.g., biopsies, lumbar punctures, and other interventions).
    • Ensure patient safety during and after procedures, adhering strictly to best practice standards and hospital protocols.
    • Accurately document the results of procedures and communicate findings to the relevant healthcare team for further action.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, contributing to discussions on complex oncology cases, providing insights, and collaborating on treatment plans.
    • Coordinate patient referrals to specialists as necessary, ensuring patients receive timely care and appropriate follow-up.

Professional Requirements

  • A minimum of five (5) years to seven (7) years of post-basic qualification experience in Medical Oncology.

Educational Requirements

  • Possess a Primary Medical Degree, MBBS or equivalent from an institute recognized by the Brunei Medical Board (BMB) of Negara Brunei Darussalam.
  • Professional Fellowship or Membership such as Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), or equivalent with work/training experience in the field Medical Oncology and/or other relevant field as recognized by the Brunei Medical Board (BMB) of Negara Brunei Darussalam is required.
