Job Summary

The i-Ready GRP Trainee in the Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Workshop supports the Engineer for planning, supervising, and executing repair, maintenance, and modification works on boats and crafts. The role involves technical assistance, hands-on support, and coordination with technicians to ensure repair quality, safety compliance, and timely project delivery

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Engineer in planning and executing GRP repair, modification, and maintenance work on boats and related crafts.

  • Perform collar repairs and replacements, including conducting air-tightness checks, fabric patching, valve repairs, and structural reinforcement.

  • Provide technical support in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving damages or defects in GRP structures.

  • Assist in preparing work instructions, repair procedures, and technical documentation for workshop use.

  • Supervise and monitor daily workshop activities, ensuring tasks are properly allocated to technicians, laminators, and painters.

  • Ensure work progress aligns with project schedules, specifications, and required quality standards.

  • Coordinate with other workshop teams—painting, electronic, and mechanical—to ensure integrated and timely repair outcomes.

  • Enforce compliance with marine standards, classification rules, and OEM repair specifications.

  • Promote and monitor safe practices, including proper use of PPE and safe handling of resins, chemicals, and GRP materials.

  • Support the Engineer in identifying required materials, tools, and consumables, while ensuring correct usage and maintenance of workshop equipment.

  • Monitor stock levels and report material shortages to the Engineer or Head of Workshop.

  • Maintain accurate repair records, work orders, inspection reports, and related documentation.

  • Provide updates on work progress, challenges, and resource needs.

  • Support training and knowledge-sharing for junior engineers, apprentices, and attachment students in GRP repair techniques and safety.

Requirements

  • Diploma in Building Craft/Mechanical/Marine/Materials Engineering (or related field).
  • Specialized training or certification in Composite/GRP materials is an advantage
  • Hands-on knowledge of GRP Repair Techniques - Skilled in cutting, grinding, laminating, and patching GRP components.

  • Understanding of GRP materials, repair methods, and classification society standards.

  • Tool Proficiency – Competent in using power tools and hand tools (grinders, polishers, cutters, brushes).

  • Ability to read and interpret repair drawings, manuals, and specifications.

  •  Strong communication and coordination skills with multi-disciplinary teams. Safety Practices – Hands-on experience in using PPE, chemical safety, and workshop HSE compliance.
